Second section of Fox River Trail in Geneva to be closed starting Sept. 14 due to construction project

A second section of the Fox River Trail in Geneva is slated to be closed for two months due to the construction of a new sanitary sewer river crossing, the city of Geneva said on Friday.

Starting the week of Sept. 14, the trail will be closed on the west side of the river near the Kane County Government Center on Route 31, south of the Union Pacific-West railway, the city said in a news release.

Cyclists and pedestrians headed northbound on the path will be detoured onto South Third Street, then east on South Street to reconnect with the trail near the pedestrian bridge beneath the train tracks, the news release from the city said. Trail users crossing the bridge from east of the Fox River will follow that same route in reverse.

This detour is expected to be in place for about two months, weather permitting, according to the city.

This is the second detour for the trail in the area currently. Starting in late July, there was another closure near Geneva’s wastewater treatment plant, located south of the Union Pacific-West railway and east of the Fox River. That section of the trail is set to reopen in late September, officials have said.

The work being done in the area involves replacing the existing 20-inch sanitary sewer river crossing with two new 20-inch sanitary sewers, per the city, which is meant to reduce the risk of sanitary overflows. The crossing carries all sanitary flow from the west side of Geneva to the wastewater treatment plant.

The project started in April, and is expected to take about 18 to 24 months to complete.
